Kachina was allegedly dragged behind a truck and beaten by Gordon Allen Bates and his 13 year old daughter. On August 3, 2008, Kachina was allegedly found on her side after falling from being beaten with a pvc pipe and lack of air due to the deadly noose that was strangling her.

Corporal Albert Phelps answered a call from a concerned citizen and witnessed the abuse. He repeatedly ordered the two to stop and was forced to draw his weapon. Corporal Phelps arrested Gordon Bates and charged him with felony animal cruelty charges. On March 19, 2009, the jury found Gordon Bates "not guilty", and the perpetrator and his daughter were off scott free. Kachina was at risk of going back to Gordon Bates after all she had been through. Horse advocates that attended the trial and the general public were appalled that Bates was found "not guilty" and Kachina was returned to him.

Equine Voices could not stand by and allow this man to take the horse to Colorado, where he currently resides. After much negotiation, Kachina was purchased by Equine Voices and currently is living at the sanctuary with Gulliver and his friends.

It is known that people who abuse animals go on to commit acts of violence against people. Gordon Bates is a geriatric nurse who engaged his 13 year old daughter in the alleged beating and strangulation of a horse to the point of collapse. The public should show no tolerance  to such acts of abuse and cruelty toward any living creature. What message has Gordon Bates and the jury sent to his daughter? Shame on the jury who allowed this man to walk without as much as a slap on the hand.

Commentary featured in Tucson Citizen: Animal cruelty must be punished

kachinaAfter I read the article in the Tucson Citizen today I knew I had to write. I was speechless, shocked and in disbelief at the outcome of this trial. How can it be that this individual was found not guilty? Shame on every member of the jury. I commend you for rescuing this poor creature and providing it with a safe place to live it's life. I agree there must be public outcry. Please tell me how we can make a difference. Who do we write to and/or call to let them know that any form of animal cruelty is unacceptable? Thank you and God Bless you for making a difference for these innocent creatures.

After hearing about the "not guilty" verdict  for the abusers of Kachina, I wanted to scream and yell. How did this happen? What was the jury thinking? Instead of continuing to fume and do nothing, my husband, Dick, and I have signed up to sponsor Kachina or any other horse you want to use the $50/month for. I wish that it could be more. My first horse was Rusty, and I paid $.60 a bale for his hay. I'll let you guess how many years ago that was!

I was horrified, certainly like many others, to learn not only of the abuse of Kachina, but that her abusers are free and were paid to release their ownership so she could be saved. Is this the end (happily for Kachina), or does Mr. Bates really get away with this? I can't even wrap my head around the fact that the jury acquitted him.
